Santa Ana Zoo in Santa Ana, California, is a great place for a complete family day out. This 20 acre zoo focuses on animal species of mostly South and Central America. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.

Joseph Prentice, donor of the land where the Santa Ana Zoo stands today, provisioned that there has to be minimum 50 monkeys in the zoo, given his love for monkeys. Thus the zoo boasts on a grand collection of primates of more that a dozen of species of them collected from around the globe.

Santa Ana Zoo receives over 270, 000foot fall a year on average. With the marvelous collection of animals, and all the fun activity zones, and the famous Zoofari Express ride Santa Ana Zoo makes the perfect weekend destination for all ages.

Santa Ana Zoo History

Mr. Prentice was one of the richest men of Santa Ana. In the year 1949, a 12acre lad piece was donated by Mr. Prentice to the Santa Ana City Memorial Park Committee.

A young man named Jack Lynch designed and built the cages of the animals at the park. The zoo finally opened in the year 1952.

In the year 1954 the first white-handed gibbon couple was brought to the zoo. In the year 1964 a variety of new animals and a farm were added to the zoo. The Friends of Santa Ana Zoo association was found in the year 1972. ITT Cannon Amphitheatre was opened in the year 1983. Santa Ana Zoo was accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the year 1985. The very next year, in 1986, the zoo’s ticket booth, restrooms, concession building, and the gift shop were constructed.

The flight aviary was renovated and named after Jack Lynch as Lynch Aviary in the year 1990. Colors of Amazon Aviary section was opened in 1996.

The most popular attraction of the Santa Ana Zoo, the Zoofari Express ride, started operating in the year 2000.

Bald eagle, domestic turkey, magpie goose, rhea, white-bellied caique, white-faced whistling duck, great horned owl, and many more such beautiful and interesting birds are housed and exhibited at the Santa Ana Zoo.

Mammals

Domestic cow, domestic goat, guanaco, crested porcupine, swamp wallaby, and many such usual mammals along with some endangered species like margay cat are housed at the Santa Ana Zoo.

Primates

Endangered species of primates like black & white ruffed lemur, black lemur, cotton top tamarin, crested capuchin, emperor tamarin, rig-tailed lemur, and white handed gibbon are conserved in Santa Ana Zoo.
