Balboa Fun Zone History

The Balboa Fun Zone is one of the oldest amusement parks in California. It was in the year 1936 that the park was constructed by Al Anderson. In the year 1948, Anderson bought the property from the original owner. Bob Speth, a former employee bought the famous Ferris wheel in the year 1956, but sold it back in the year 1964. Jordan Wank then rebuilt the entire park and re-opened it in the year 1986.

In the year 1994 the fun zone was purchased by a former employee Joe Tunstall. The fun zone is comprised of an arcade, amusement park, shops, restaurants as well as some astonishing rides. The Ferris wheel and the merry go-round serve as a great attraction for the visitors, especially for the kids. It was on September, 2006 that the rides were removed to make room for the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum.

The current Ferris wheel is not the original one from 1972 and is not also in the same location that the original one was in.

Sugar Bowl Ski Resort History

During the 1800s, the peaks of Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Judah comprised a section of the American pioneers route. Later, several construction works were held in this area which gradually changed the economy of the region and made the area more accessible. The Mt. Lincoln area was immortalized in the silver screen when in 1924 scenes from the Charlie Chaplin movie “The Gold Rush” was filmed here.

The piece of land where the resort was later to be built was originally owned by Stephen and Jennie Pilcher. When the land was put on for sale by their daughters in 1937, Austrian ski instructors Bill Klein and Hannès Schroll decided to purchase it. Within the next two years, Schroll collected enough funds amidst significant difficulties and working on the resort began by June 1939. Bill and Schroll decided to name the resort “Sugar Bowl” as they thought that the snow resembled sugar crystals. Sugar Bowl was opened for public on 15th December, 1939.

Sugar Bowl Ski Resort Directions

Sugar Bowl Ski Resort is located on the Donner Summit near Sierra Nevada. It takes only a 45-minute drive from Reno and a 3 hour-drive from San Francisco to get here.

If you are coming from Sacramento, you have to take the Interstate 80 east. Exit at Norden/Soda Springs and drive eastwards down the Highway 40 to Sugar bowl’s Village Gondola parking lot.

While coming down from Reno, take Interstate 80 west and turn left from the Donner Pass road at the last Truckee exit. Turn left from the Sugar Bowl main entrance sign, 3 miles past the Donner Lake.

You can avail buses, eco taxis or shuttle services to arrive at the resort.

Rose Bowl History:

The Rose Bowl has played host to a series of world famous events which include 5 NFL Super Bowl Games and the 1984 Olympic Soccer matches. Even the finals for the 1994 Fifa World Cup and in 1999 for the Woman’s Fifa World Cup Finals took place at the stadium. The Rose Bowl became the home ground of the UCLA Bruins College football team of the Pac-10 Conference in 1982. Its design was inspired by the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut.

The Rose Bowl Game originally used to take place at Tournament Park. Until 1922, the organizers of the Rose Parade decided that the stands were not able to accommodate a crowd of over 40,000 people. It was then that the stadium was constructed and also known as ‘ Tournament of Roses Stadium’ or ‘Tournament of Roses Bowl’. It was only in 1923 that the name ‘Rose Bowl’ was settled on.

The Rose Bowl Game has been a part of the Bowl Championship Series (BSC) since 1998 and is one of the most watched college games since 1945.
